This healthy drink recipe is great for kids and contains no artificial colors or preservatives.

Homemade Gatorade

My 8 year old son absolutely loves Gatorade. In our house it’s typically treat food he enjoys occasionally. But the other day I wondered, could I create a homemade version that he would love just as much?

Turns out, coconut water and fresh citrus juice make a pretty convincing dupe! I also had some blue spirulina left over from making my favorite blue smoothie, so it was perfect for making the blue flavor. It takes just 5 minutes to put together and is so refreshing, I might love it even more than he does!

Why make your own Gatorade?

Store-bought sports drinks like Gatorade often contain artificial colors, high fructose corn syrup, and preservatives. When you make your own, you control every single ingredient that goes into your body!

Ingredients in homemade Gatorade

Here are the ingredients for my homemade Gatorade recipe — I tried it keep this healthy drink simple with a deliciously balanced flavor:

  • Coconut water: Coconut water is naturally packed with potassium, magnesium, and electrolytes. It provides natural hydration without added sugars.
  • Fresh lime juice: The citrus adds that tangy flavor that makes Gatorade so refreshing. I always use fresh lime juice, never bottled – the flavor is so much brighter.
  • Honey: Instead of artificial sweeteners or high fructose corn syrup, I use honey for natural sweetness. If you’re looking for honey substitutes, agave or maple syrup work well too.
  • Blue spirulina: This is what gives our drink that gorgeous blue color naturally! Spirulina is a nutrient-dense algae.
  • Sea salt: Just a pinch helps replace the sodium lost through sweat and enhances the other flavors in the drink.

Ingredient spotlight: spirulina

The spirulina you typically find in stores is green, but there’s also a blue version that makes a great color for this drink. You can use either!

  • Blue spirulina (phycocyanin) is an extract with a mild flavor and a bright hue that comes from the phycocyanin pigment that’s extracted and concentrated. We bought this pack of blue spirulina—remember you only use a teaspoon or so at a time, so it should last quite a while! It’s also great for making my tropical blue smoothie.
  • Green spirulina is the whole algae; it has a stronger flavor but when used in small quantities, it does not add flavor to the overall drink!
Blue spirulina

Other homemade Gatorade colors

You can use other natural juices here: try lemon juice for a more yellow color, tart cherry juice for red, orange juice for orange, or blueberry juice for purple.

Storage and make ahead tips

This homemade Gatorade is best consumed fresh, but it will keep in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Store it in a sealed container or jar. It’s easy to make a double or triple batch for drinks throughout the week.

Frozen Espresso Martini https://www.acouplecooks.com/frozen-espresso-martini/ https://www.acouplecooks.com/frozen-espresso-martini/#comments Thu, 17 Jul 2025 15:00:00 +0000 https://www.acouplecooks.com/?p=161264 This frozen espresso martini is a fun twist on the classic that comes together in 5 minutes! This creamy, frosty cocktail has rich coffee flavor with just 4 simple ingredients.

Frozen Espresso Martini in stemmed glass.

Here’s my new favorite cocktail for any season: the frozen espresso martini! The classic espresso martini is one of the most popular cocktails in America, and guess what? My frozen version is even easier to make (and more delicious, in my opinion).

My spin on this recipe is extremely simple. Many recipes call for making espresso and freezing it into ice cubes, but who has time for that? (Not me.) When I started recipe testing, I realized a game-changing secret: cold brew coffee. It makes this drink into a simple 5-minute blender recipe! Now I can whip up a pitcher of frozen espresso martinis whenever the craving strikes, and it’s become one of my most-requested summer cocktails by friends and family!

Ingredients in a frozen espresso martini

This recipe came about as a happy accident. Wondering if I could use bottled cold brew coffee in a frozen version of the classic espresso martini, I whipped out my blender. Turns out, it works perfectly—so the frozen version of this cocktail ready in just 5 minutes! Here are the ingredients you’ll need:

  • Cold brew coffee (or strong coffee): I typically use store-bought cold brew concentrate because it’s convenient. If you’re feeling ambitious, you can make your own cold brew coffee or even French press cold brew. You can also make coffee using your favorite method: make it double strength and chill it before blending. Another option is Moka Pot coffee, since its flavor is somewhere between coffee and espresso.
  • Vodka: I prefer a smooth, neutral vodka that won’t compete with the coffee flavors.
  • Kahlúa: This coffee liqueur adds sweetness and depth. You can substitute with Tia Maria if you prefer.
  • Sugar: A touch of granulated sugar balances the natural bitterness of the coffee. For a more natural option, try maple syrup or agave syrup, using ¾ of the sugar specified in the recipe..
  • Ice: Plenty of ice is essential for achieving that perfect frozen texture.

How to make a frozen espresso martini: step by step

The beauty of this recipe lies in its simplicity. Here’s how I make it every time:

Frozen espresso Martini ingredients

Step 1: Gather the ingredients: 1 cup cold brew coffee, ¼ cup Kahlua, ¼ cup vodka, 3 tablespoons sugar, and 3 cups ice.

How to make a frozen espresso martini Step 2

Step 2: Blend the ingredients in a blender.

Frozen Espresso Martini Step 3: Garnish.

Step 3: Pour into glasses and garnish with 3 coffee beans.

The story behind the drink

The Espresso Martini is a vodka martini made with coffee that was invented in 1983. London bartender Dick Bradsell of the Soho Brasserie created the drink for a patron who asked for a drink to wake her up.

Apparently the coffee machine was right next to the drink station, and the Espresso Martini was born. The name came in the 1990’s when flavored martinis were all the rage.

Kahlua is a coffee liqueur that’s made in Mexico. It’s made with rum, sugar and coffee. It does have some caffeine, but only about 25% as much as the same volume of coffee. The standard Kahlua is dairy-free, vegan and plant-based: it contains only rum, sugar and coffee.

You can also use other types of coffee liqueur in a frozen espresso martini, like Tia Maria or Sheridan’s. Use up leftovers to make Kahlua drinks like the White RussianBlack Russian or Mudslide.

Frequently asked questions

How does a frozen espresso martini differ from a regular one?

The main difference is texture. A frozen espresso martini is blended with ice, creating a slushy, refreshing drink, similar to a frozen margarita. The flavor profile is similar to the classic cocktail.

Can I adjust the sweetness level?

Absolutely! If you prefer a sweeter drink, add a bit more sugar. For a less sweet version, reduce the amount. We don’t suggest omitting it.

What kind of garnish should I use?

Coffee beans are the classic choice, but you can also use a sprinkle of cocoa powder or even a dollop of whipped cream.

Can I make a large batch ahead of time?

It’s best to blend right before serving to have the correct slushy texture. If desired, you can mix up the liquids and refrigerate, then blend with ice right before serving. You can also blend and freeze for up to 1 hour, then stir with a fork before serving.

Whiskey Sour https://www.acouplecooks.com/whiskey-sour/ https://www.acouplecooks.com/whiskey-sour/#comments Thu, 10 Jul 2025 20:45:00 +0000 http://www.acouplecooks.com/?p=2526 Here’s how to make the perfect whiskey sour with fresh lemon juice and quality bourbon! This classic cocktail recipe delivers the ideal balance of sweet, tart, and boozy flavors in minutes.

Whiskey Sour recipe in cocktail glass with cherry.

I’ll never forget the first time I tried a properly made whiskey sour. My father-in-law is extremely passionate about this drink, but the type made with sour mix. So as cocktail experts, Alex and I set about to create a recipe for this classic cocktail. After the first sip I was hooked: the sweet-tart citrus with warming bourbon is pure magic.

Since then, I’ve spent years perfecting my own whiskey sour recipe. This isn’t just another cocktail recipe—it’s the key to making a drink that’ll have your friends and family asking for the recipe every single time!

What makes this whiskey sour recipe special

I’ve tested dozens of whiskey sour variations over the years, and I’ve found that the secret lies in three key elements: using fresh lemon juice (never bottled), choosing the right bourbon, and my favorite twist: swapping simple syrup for pure maple syrup. That small change adds caramel undertones that make this drink even tastier—but you can make it with the classic simple syrup, too!

The whiskey sour dates back to the 1860s, making it one of America’s oldest cocktails. But despite that history, I’ve found that many people have only experienced the overly sweet, artificially colored versions served at chain restaurants. A proper whiskey sour should be perfectly balanced, not too sweet nor too tart, with the bourbon flavor shining through.

Whiskey sour ingredients

The whiskey sour is a classic sour cocktail made with whiskey, lemon juice, and simple syrup. It’s often served with an egg white foam, in which case it’s sometimes called a Boston Sour.

The earliest mention of this classic cocktail was in the 1862 book The Bartender’s Guide: How To Mix Drinks by Jerry Thomas. The ingredients are the same today:

  • 2 oz bourbon whiskey: as high quality as possible. (You can use any whiskey, but we prefer the flavor of bourbon.)
  • 1 oz lemon juice
  • ¾ to 1 oz simple syrup
  • Orange or lemon peel and cocktail cherry, for garnish

Pro tip

Adjust the sweetness level in a whiskey sour to fit your tastes. A classic sour formula is 2:1:1, which means 2 oz spirit, 1 oz citrus and 1 oz sweetener. We prefer a whiskey sour with ¾ oz syrup, which lets the whiskey flavor shine. But if you prefer a sweeter cocktail, use up to 1 oz syrup.

Bourbon whiskey bottle

Choosing the best whiskey for whiskey sours

In my experience, the bourbon you choose makes all the difference. I typically reach for mid-range bottles in the $25 to $35 range—something that can stand up to the citrus and sweetener, but is not so expensive you’d want to save it for sipping.

My go-to picks include Elijah Craig Small Batch, Four Roses Small Batch, or Woodford Reserve. For special occasions, I like Bulleit 10 Year Bourbon, which adds vanilla and spice notes. I’ve also experimented with rye whiskey, which creates a stronger, spicier finish.

You can mix up the type of whiskey to create variations on this drink: a Buchanan Sour uses Scotch, the Penicillin stars Scotch and ginger honey syrup, an Irish Sour uses Irish whiskey, and the Ward 8 cocktail stars rye whiskey, orange and grenadine.

A note on the sweetener

While most bartenders use simple syrup to sweeten drinks, I’ve found that pure maple syrup creates a more complex, nuanced sweetness. The natural caramel notes in maple syrup complement bourbon beautifully, adding depth without overpowering the drink (and no, it doesn’t taste like maple!).

I’ve done countless side-by-side taste tests with family and friends, and maple syrup wins every single time. The difference is subtle but it transforms a good whiskey sour into a great one.

Easy whiskey sour recipe splashing out of glass

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ “This is my go to whiskey sour recipe! I’ve tried it with a few different bourbon brands and it’s always is delicious. Started buying maple syrup in bulk!” -Patricia

Whiskey sour mix for a crowd

If you’re looking for a whiskey sour mix, but you don’t want to get one of those store bought containers with lots of sugar. You can also make this recipe as a mix to make lots of drinks at once. It’s good made up to 24 hours in advance.

  • To make a whiskey sour mix for 8 drinks: Mix 1 cup lemon juice plus ¾ cup simple syrup or maple syrup. Or, make our Sweet and Sour Mix.
  • To make a single drink: Measure out 3 ½ tablespoons of the mix with 4 tablespoons whiskey (see Whiskey Sour Mix).

Once you’ve mastered the basic recipe, there are so many variations on this bourbon cocktail. I especially love the New York Sour, which floats red wine on top for a beautiful two-toned drink. The Gold Rush is another fun spin that uses honey syrup instead of maple.

For citrus lovers, try my Cranberry Orange Whiskey Sour for a seasonal flair. The Amaretto Whiskey Sour incorporates Italian almond liqueur for complexity. And if you’re feeling adventurous, the Whiskey Sour with Egg White has a silky foam top.

Frequently asked questions

Why do you put egg whites in whiskey sour?

Adding an egg white gives a silky texture and a smooth, luxurious mouthfeel to the drink. A whiskey sour can be made with or without egg whites. A whiskey sour with egg white is also called Boston Sour.

Bartenders have been adding egg whites to sour cocktails since the 1860’s or before. Several drinks contain egg white in the 1862 book The Bartender’s Guide: How To Mix Drinks by Jerry Thomas.

What is the 3 2 1 ratio for whiskey sours?

Some people say that the best ratio for a whiskey sour is 3 parts spirits, 2 parts sour, 1 part sweet. However, the classic formula for a sour is a 2:1:1 ratio, or 2 parts spirits, 1 part sour and 1 part sweet. We prefer a 2:1:1 ratio for a whiskey sour.

What’s the difference between a whiskey sour and a sour mix drink?

A classic whiskey sour uses fresh lemon juice and simple syrup, creating a balanced and complex flavor profile. Sour mix drinks often rely on pre-made sour mixes, which can be overly sweet and lack depth.

Do I need a special glass for a whiskey sour?

You can use either a classic coupe glass or a rocks glass.

Can I make this drink ahead of time?

Pre-squeeze your lemon juice and prepare simple syrup in advance. However, assemble and serve the whiskey sour right before drinking for the freshest flavors and frothiest texture.

What is a substitute for an egg white in cocktails?

For an egg-free alternative to egg white foams, this Fee Brothers Cocktail Foamer has become a popular alternative. You can also use 2 tablespoons aquafaba, the liquid from a can of chickpeas.

Sparkling Lemonade https://www.acouplecooks.com/sparkling-lemonade/ https://www.acouplecooks.com/sparkling-lemonade/#comments Mon, 30 Jun 2025 13:00:00 +0000 https://www.acouplecooks.com/?p=93271 Here’s how to make refreshing sparkling lemonade at home with just three simple ingredients! This bubbly summer drink is perfect for parties and takes only 5 minutes to prepare.

Sparkling lemonade

When the temperature starts climbing, I find myself craving something cold, bubbly, and refreshingly tart. That’s when I turn to this sparkling lemonade recipe! Alex and I have been perfecting this simple three-ingredient drink for years, and I can honestly say it’s become a family favorite summer drink.

There’s a little magic in the bright citrus flavor with those delightful bubbles—the perfect balance of sweet and tart! I love that there’s no artificial flavors or high fructose corn syrup: just all natural refreshing flavor.

Ingredients for sparkling lemonade

The ingredients for homemade sparkling lemonade are simple: you’ll just need 3 ingredients to mix up a zingy glass! Here’s all you’ll need:

  • Lemons: You’ll need lemon juice from real lemons: no bottled lemon juice here! For one glass, you’ll need 1 large or 2 small lemons.
  • Simple syrup: Simple syrup is easy to make at home with sugar and water. Mix up a batch and store it in the fridge to use for lemonade or cocktail recipes.
  • Soda water: Buy your own sparkling water or club soda, or you can make your own in a Soda Stream (that’s what I prefer!).
Sparkling lemonade

Make it by the glass or a pitcher

Once you’ve got your ingredients, all you have to do is mix them together! The main way I like to make it is by the glass, since you get fresh bubbles right in your glass. But if you’re entertaining and want to make it for a crowd, you can go the pitcher route!

  • By the glass: You can make 10 ounces or 1 ½ cups sparkling lemonade with the recipe below—make it for on demand drinking.
  • Pitcher: For parties, mix up a pitcher that serves 8 1-cup servings. Keep in mind, leftovers don’t last because of the sparkling water.

My favorite methods for juicing lemons

After making hundreds of glasses of lemonade, I’ve learned the most efficient ways to extract maximum juice:

Best tool: A press juicer is my top choice. It extracts more juice than any other method I’ve tried and keeps seeds contained.

Second choice: A handheld citrus reamer with ridges works well and doesn’t require any special equipment.

If you’re going to hand squeeze, one tip is to cut lemons in half crosswise (not lengthwise) and squeeze over a fine-mesh strainer to catch seeds. This is definitely more labor intensive, so grab a press juicer if you can!

Lemons

Step it up with clear ice

Want a fancy glass of sparkling lemonade that looks like the one in the photos? Make a batch of clear ice! Clear ice is homemade ice that’s crystal clear, instead of cloudy like normal ice.

You can cut it into large, organic shaped cubes and it looks like ice from a fancy bar or restaurant. We use clear ice for lots of our cocktail recipes: and you can use it for sparkling lemonade too.

Cocktails that use sparkling lemonade

You can use this homemade sparkling lemonade in cocktail recipes and it makes a beautifully bright citrus flavor. In fact, Alex and I originally developed this recipe when making a Summer Shandy.

  • Summer Shandy: A shandy is a British beer cocktail that mixes beer and sparkling lemonade or ginger ale. Also try a Classic Shandy.
  • Pimm’s Cup: This British cocktail is refreshing and bubbly, featuring Pimm’s No. 1 and sparkling lemonade. It’s perfect for summer (and often served at Wimbledon, if you’re a tennis fan like I am.)

Mexican Mule https://www.acouplecooks.com/mexican-mule/ https://www.acouplecooks.com/mexican-mule/#respond Sun, 15 Jun 2025 00:25:00 +0000 https://www.acouplecooks.com/?p=66294 The Mexican Mule recipe combines tequila, lime juice, and ginger beer for a refreshing twist on the classic Moscow Mule. Ready in 2 minutes, it’s the perfect easy tequila cocktail for any occasion!

Mexican mule

Can’t get enough tequila drinks? Here’s one of the best of them all, in my opinion (outside of the margarita, of course). Enter the Mexican mule! This drink is bold, it’s bubbly, and it’s ready to spice up your next gathering.

To me, this tequila-based spin on the Moscow Mule might be even better than its inspiration. The way the bite of the tequila combines with spicy ginger and zingy lime makes it impossible not to immediately take another sip. Like other mules, it’s also incredibly simple to whip up in the glass: no cocktail shaker required.

What’s in a Mexican mule?

The Mexican mule is a tequila-based spin on the Moscow mule, a classic cocktail from the 1940’s. The mule is actually part of a family of cocktails called bucks, cocktails that are made with ginger ale or ginger beer, citrus juice, and liquor. So a Moscow mule is a vodka buck, and a Mexican mule is a tequila buck!

The Moscow mule is such a classic that it made the list of International Bartender Association’s IBA official cocktails, meaning that it has an “official” definition. Swap in tequila for vodka to get the Mexican version! The ingredients in a Mexican mule are:

  • Tequila
  • Lime juice
  • Ginger beer
How to make a Mexican mule

How to make a Mexican mule

The Mexican mule is one of the easiest cocktails you can make! Because you want to preserve the carbonation of the ginger beer, you don’t want to use a cocktail shaker. Here’s all you have to do to make a Mexican mule (or jump right to the recipe):

  1. Pour the tequila, lime juice, and ginger beer into a copper mug or serving glass of your choice.
  2. Add ice cubes, and garnish with lime. It’s that easy!

Want more with ginger beer? Try our Top Ginger Beer Cocktails.

Why to use copper mugs

When you order a mule at a restaurant or bar, it’s usually served in a copper mug. Of course, copper is not required. You can serve a mule in a low ball glass, Ball jar, or a standard mug and it’s still considered a Mexican mule! But if you want to stay classic, we recommend the copper mugs. There’s actually something to it:

  • Copper keeps the drink cool in a different way than glass. The copper immediately takes on the temperature of the drink and becomes ice cold to the touch. There really is something unique about taking a sip out of an ice-cold copper mug!
  • It’s also tradition. According to this source, the Moscow mule was invented as a marketing scheme in the 1940’s to sell more vodka, ginger beer, and copper mugs. People in Hollywood fell in love with it, it caught on, and it’s still the traditional way to drink this cocktail.

Where to buy copper mugs for mules? After spending years without real copper mugs, Alex and I splurged and got a set. We’re glad we did! You can use them for any type of drink, and they make great gifts, too. Here’s a link to some copper mugs on Amazon.

More highball cocktails

A mule is a highball cocktail: a family of mixed drinks that combine alcohol with a larger percentage of non-alcoholic mixer. It might not be served in a highball glass, but the bubbly ginger beer mixer takes this to highball status. There are lots of famous highballs like the good old gin and tonic or vodka cranberry. Here are a few more I’d recommend trying:

  • The Vodka Tonic is one of the easiest mixed drinks of all time! This two-ingredient cocktail is bubbly, citrusy, and refreshing.
  • Ranch Water is a Texas-style tequila highball drink made with lime, tequila and Topo Chico! This bubbly cocktail is all about cooling off on hot days.
  • The Whiskey Highball is tall, bubbly, and a great way to enjoy your favorite whiskey.
  • For a refreshing Sea Breeze, pour vodka, cranberry, and grapefruit over lots of ice.

When to serve a Mexican mule

The Mexican mule is bold, bubbly and zingy. Here are my favorite ways to serve it:

  • Summer Patio Parties: Alex and I like to set up a mule bar with different ginger beers and garnish options.
  • Mexican Food Pairings: It pairs well with shrimp tacos, black bean tacos, or any dish with bold, spicy flavors.
  • Happy Hour Alternative: When I want other than the classic margarita pitcher, this is my go-to choice.
  • Brunch Cocktails: Surprisingly great with Mexican-inspired breakfast dishes like breakfast tacos or migas.

Frequently asked questions

What’s the difference between a Mexican Mule and a Moscow Mule?

Both mules share the base of ginger beer and lime juice. However, a Mexican Mule swaps the traditional vodka in a Moscow Mule for tequila, adding a smoky and spicy note.

What kind of tequila should I use?

A silver or blanco tequila is the most common choice for a Mexican Mule. It offers a clean and crisp base that allows the ginger and lime flavors to shine without clashing.

Is ginger beer spicy?

Ginger beer has a strong ginger flavor with a slight peppery kick. Some brands offer spicier varieties, so choose one based on your preference.

What can I add for extra flavor?

A muddled jalapeno slice or a splash of jalapeno-infused tequila can add a delicious spicy kick.

What’s the best way to garnish a Mexican Mule?

A lime wedge is the classic garnish. You can also add a sprig of mint or a slice of jalapeno for extra visual appeal and a touch of spice.

If you love cocktails with sweet, chocolaty flavor, the Bushwacker is your signature drink! This lusciously creamy drink is like the lovechild of a chocolate milkshake and a classic piña colada, with rich coffee and coconut notes that make it absolutely irresistible.

As a cookbook author and drink expert who’s tested countless cocktail recipes over the years, the Bushwacker is one of the top frozen drinks I like to recommend. It’s perfect for sipping poolside as a summer cocktail, or as a dessert drink any time you’re dreaming of sun.

Bushwacker ingredients

The Bushwacker is a frozen cocktail made with rum, Kahlua, creme de cacao, cream of coconut, and milk, known for its creamy texture, sweet flavor, and boozy kick. Invented in the 1970’s in St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands, it has since become popular in Florida and the American South. This frozen boozy milkshake relies on these ingredients blended to perfection with 3 cups of ice:

  • Rum (2 oz): I typically use aged rum for its subtle vanilla and caramel undertones, but white or dark rum work well too.
  • Kahlua (2 oz): The smooth sweetness of Mexican coffee liqueur Kahlua is perfect for this recipe. You can use leftovers in my classic Mudslide recipe.
  • Creme de cacao (2 oz): The popular chocolate liqueur creme de cacao is available in both white and dark varieties. The original Bushwacker had dark creme de cacao, but white is easier to find and what gives the drink its signature flavor.
  • Cream of coconut (2 oz): This is crucial—make sure you buy cream of coconut (the sweetened syrup for drinks), not coconut cream. It’s easy to find in squeeze bottles at liquor stores or online.
  • Milk: (2 oz): Any milk works here. I use 2%, but you can easily substitute oat milk or almond milk for a dairy-free version.

Tip: If you accidentally buy coconut cream, you can still save your Bushwhacker! Use 1 oz coconut cream and 1 oz simple syrup in place of the 2 oz cream of coconut.

The story behind this tropical classic

The Bushwacker has a charming origin story. It was created in 1975 at the Ship’s Store Pub in St Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands a tropical spin on the White Russian by bartender Angie Conigliaro and manager Tom Brokamp. Apparently they named it after a guest’s dog, an Afghan hound named Bushwack!

Tips for making a Bushwacker drink

Once you’ve got your specialty liquors, mixing up the Bushwacker drink is a breeze! Here are a few tips:

  • Pour into a glass and garnish with a straw. Garnish with a maraschino cherry for a classic presentation.
  • Stir it with a straw if it separates. The drink tends to separate, which is normal: just stir it up with your straw while drinking!
  • It’s easily made dairy-free: There’s no dairy in any of the liqueurs in a Bushwacker drink, so it’s easy to convert it into a dairy free or vegan cocktail using any type of non-dairy milk, like oat milk or coconut milk.

Storage and make ahead tips

The Bushwacker drink is definitely best fresh, but here are some tricks I’ve learned for planning ahead:

  • Immediate Storage: If you need to step away, store your blended Bushwacker in the freezer for up to 30 minutes. Just give it a good stir before serving.
  • Make-Ahead Prep: You can pre-measure all the liquid ingredients and store them in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. Add ice and blend when ready to serve.
  • Batch Making: For parties, you can make double or triple batches; whatever fits in your blender!
  • Leftovers: Any leftover Bushwacker can be frozen in ice cube trays to use in future drinks.

Frequently asked questions

What does a Bushwacker taste like?

The dominant flavors are chocolate and coconut, with hints of coffee and rum. The creaminess adds a luxurious mouthfeel, and the overall taste is sweet and refreshing. It’s not a strong drink, but there’s enough alcohol that it should be enjoyed responsibly.

Is a Bushwacker similar to a Piña Colada?

While both are creamy and tropical, a Piña Colada features rum, pineapple juice, and cream of coconut. The Bushwacker adds coffee liqueur, dark crème de cacao, and skips the pineapple juice, resulting in a more chocolatey and coffee-forward flavor.

What kind of rum is best for a Bushwacker?

Dark rum is the traditional choice, offering a deeper flavor compared to lighter rums. You can also aged rum (anejo) with great results. White rum works but has a more straightforward flavor.

What is creme de cacao and what other drinks use it?

Creme de cacao is a chocolate liqueur. It’s possibly one of the first alcoholic beverages, made in the 1600’s by monks after cocoa beans were brought back to Europe from America (source).

Use it to make creme de cacao drinks like the Brandy AlexanderChocolate Martini, or Grasshopper.

What is the difference between cream of coconut and coconut cream?

Cream of coconut is a sweetened syrup for drinks, made with coconut cream and sugar. You can use up leftovers in coconut cocktails like the Piña Colada, Chi Chi, Painkiller, or Coconut Martini.

Coconut cream is unsweetened, very thick, and has a strong coconut flavor. It’s typically sold in cans next to the coconut milk.

Read more at Cream of Coconut vs Coconut Cream.

What other drinks use Kahlua?

There are many Kahlua drinks! Try it in a Mudslide, Espresso Martini, B-52, Kahlua Coffee, Mind Eraser, Colorado Bulldog, Black Russian or White Russian.

How to Make Cold Foam https://www.acouplecooks.com/how-to-make-cold-foam/ https://www.acouplecooks.com/how-to-make-cold-foam/#comments Fri, 13 Jun 2025 14:00:00 +0000 https://www.acouplecooks.com/?p=110968 Learn how to make cold foam at home with just skim milk and simple syrup. This easy 2-minute recipe creates the perfect creamy, frothy topping for iced coffee and cold brew drinks.

How to make cold foam

There’s nothing quite like a sip of iced coffee topped with perfectly frothy cold foam. This creamy substance is the Starbucks answer to a whipped topping for iced coffee drinks, and it adds just the right frothy charm without loads of extra calories.

Even better, you can make it at home! After countless experiments in my kitchen (and a few failed attempts), I’ve perfected the art of homemade cold foam. The best part? You only need two ingredients and about 30 seconds: a DIY Starbucks recipe so you can enjoy this treat at home. I love it atop a glass of cold brew coffee!

What makes perfect cold foam

Cold foam is frothed nonfat milk used for topping for cold coffee drinks like iced coffee, cold brew, iced cappuccinos, and nitro coffee. It simulates the frothy topping of the steamed milk in a latte or cappuccino, but at a cold temperature so it doesn’t melt when hitting an iced drink.

The foam has a thick, frothy texture, and gradually settles in as you sip it. Because it’s made with nonfat milk, it adds only a handful of calories to the drink. But the lightly sweet crema topping has a major pay-off in texture! If you’ve had this one at Starbucks, you know: cold foam makes any iced coffee that much better.

Cold foam in glass with straw

About Starbucks cold foam

Starbucks launched cold foam in 2014 with the opening of its Reserve Roastery in Seattle. It was first served on the Americano Con Crema drink. Today, Starbucks offers cold foam as a topping you can add to many drinks for an extra 50 cents.

If you’re wondering, sweet cream cold foam is a variation made with milk, heavy cream, and vanilla syrup, whereas cold foam is made with nonfat milk. Try this sweet cream cold foam if that’s what you’re looking for.

How to make cold foam—pro tips

How to make cold foam at home? It’s very simple to make this treat to top all your homemade iced coffees and cold brews: and an incredibly impressive! Here’s what you’ll need to do (or scroll to the recipe below):

  • Use a handheld a milk frother. The best way to make Starbucks cold foam at home is using a handheld milk frother. At only $8.00, it’s the best tool for making thick, fluffy foam and is worth the purchase. (Hey, that’s just 16 Starbucks orders of the stuff!). A French press also works. I’ve tried whisks, but they create large, unstable bubbles that disappear.
  • Keep your milk cold. Room temperature milk simply won’t froth properly.
  • Use a tall, narrow container. I prefer a mason jar or tall glass that allows the frother to create a proper vortex.
  • Froth for 15 to 20 seconds. It takes only about 15 seconds to whip up into a thick foam. For the French press instructions, go to how to froth milk.
Frothing milk

Variation: add vanilla

Want to step up your cold foam? You can add a hint of vanilla extract to add a delicious nuance to the flavor. At first we wondered whether this would turn the topping a light brown color. But after testing it, it doesn’t make a perceptible difference in whiteness versus the original.

My favorite way to use cold foam

The versatility of cold foam never ceases to amaze me. Here are my top ways to use this creamy topping:

Dietary notes

This cold foam recipe is vegetarian and gluten-free.

Frequently asked questions

What milk is best for cold foam?

Skim or low-fat milk (1% or 2%) froths best due to the higher milk protein content. Non-dairy milks like oat milk can also be used, but experiment to find a brand that froths well.

Why won’t my cold foam froth?

The milk might be too warm. Use cold milk straight from the fridge for optimal frothing. Or, you might not be using enough milk protein: opt for skim or low-fat milk.

Can I flavor my cold foam?

Absolutely! Add a dash of vanilla, vanilla syrup, or a pinch of cinnamon before frothing.

How long does cold foam stay good?

Cold foam is best enjoyed fresh. It will start to lose its texture after about 30 minutes.

How to Make a Refreshing Cucumber Water https://www.acouplecooks.com/cucumber-water/ https://www.acouplecooks.com/cucumber-water/#comments Thu, 12 Jun 2025 19:52:00 +0000 https://www.acouplecooks.com/?p=104479 Turn plain water into a refreshing drink in 5 minutes with this cucumber water recipe! Here are my tips for the perfect spa-like infused water, plus creative variations with herbs and citrus.

Cucumber water in glass and pitcher.

Want to make your hydrating more fun? Try cucumber water! You may have seen it at resorts or spas, and the botanical flavor tastes like poolside relaxation in a sip.

I love making a pitcher of this tasty infused water for parties, or simply when I want to make my daily water intake more enjoyable. Do you simply combine cucumber and water? Well, kind of. Here’s what you need to know about how to make this tasty drink!

Cucumber water, step-by-step

Cucumber water requires two ingredients: cucumbers and water. But to make it, you do need one extra thing: time! It takes 1 hour for the flavor to infuse into the water. Here’s what to do:

  • Slice ½ cucumber into thin rounds.
  • Muddle for maximum flavor. Here’s my secret: I gently mash the cucumber slices at the bottom of the pitcher with a wooden spoon before adding water. This releases those refreshing juices, creating a more flavorful drink.
  • Add 8 cups of cold water.
  • Refrigerate for 1 hour.

Cheater tip: This infused water actually tastes pretty good after about 10 minutes. So if you’re in a rush, you can serve immediately. Just use very cold water.

Choosing your cucumber

You can use any type of cucumber for this cucumber water! Often, you’ll see it with the standard variety, but an English cucumber works, too:

  • English cucumbers are long and straight, with a thin skin with ridges and very small seeds. Because the thin skin is so fragile, it’s sold with a plastic covering in the grocery store. This is my favorite type to use in cucumber recipes like cucumber salad or tzatziki sauce, because the flavor is so mild and it doesn’t need to be peeled.
  • Standard slicing cucumbers are shorter, with thick, dark green skin and very large seeds. The thick skin and seeds can be bitter, so they’re often removed when cooking.
English cucumber vs standard cucumbers.
English cucumbers are longer, with ridged outsides and delicate skin

Possible add-ins

On the regular, I just drink it straight up, but there are a few optional ingredients you can add before and after serving to make it really pop. These are perfect for entertaining:

  • Fresh herbs like mint or basil: Add herbs when you add the cucumber; allow to infuse for 1 hour.
  • Lemon or lime: I like serving this water with a few lemon wedges or slices, or you can let the citrus infuse.

Storage tips

Cucumber water lasts even longer than most infused water recipes. Plan to store it for up to 3 days in the refrigerator. (Other fruits and veggies like strawberries tend to fall apart over time!) That all said, this cucumber water tastes best within 1 day.

Cucumber water in pitcher.

Try it with sparkling water

Revive your cucumber water with some bubbles! You can add sparkling water or club soda to get a flavored bubbly water. I use a SodaStream, or you can use your favorite brand of sparkling water.

Frequently asked questions

What are the benefits of drinking cucumber water?

Cucumber water is a refreshing and hydrating drink. Cucumbers are high in water content and contain vitamins and minerals like vitamin K and potassium. Staying hydrated is important for overall health, and cucumber water can be a tasty way to increase your water intake.

Can I use any type of cucumber?

Yes, you can use any type of cucumber you prefer. English cucumbers or Persian cucumbers are often preferred for their thinner skin and fewer seeds, but regular slicing cucumbers work well too. Just make sure to wash them thoroughly before using.

Can I drink cucumber water every day?

Yes, you can enjoy cucumber water daily as part of a healthy lifestyle. It’s a great way to stay hydrated and enjoy the refreshing flavor of cucumbers.

Iced Americano https://www.acouplecooks.com/iced-americano/ https://www.acouplecooks.com/iced-americano/#comments Wed, 11 Jun 2025 00:28:00 +0000 https://www.acouplecooks.com/?p=122803 This bold and refreshing iced Americano beats any coffee shop version! Learn the technique that transforms basic espresso into the perfect iced coffee drink, from two coffee experts who’ve cracked the code.

Iced Americano

My first homemade iced Americano was a revelation. I love a good classic Americano—diluting creamy espresso with hot water opens up its flavor and lets you enjoy the cup a little longer. But often, coffee shop versions taste weak and watered down. Made at home, the rich, bold espresso poured over ice created something infinitely better than anything I’d ever had at any coffee shop!

Now, making an iced Americano is my morning ritual (though let’s be honest, Alex usually makes it for me!). Once you master this simple technique, you’ll never go back to coffee shop versions! As two coffee experts, we’ve mastered making just about every coffee drink at home. Here’s how to make an iced Americano!

Ingredients you need

A classic Americano is an espresso drink made with hot water and espresso, also called a Caffe Americano. The drink can be made with either one or two shots of espresso and varying ratios of water. A true Americano does not include milk like a latte or cappuccino.

An Iced Americano a coffee drink made by combining espresso shots with cold water and ice—essentially, a classic Americano over ice. The cold water is optional: you can add it or simply let the ice do the diluting. For this drink you’ll need:

  • 1 doubleshot espresso
  • ½ cup ice
  • Cold water, optional
Iced Americano

How to make an iced Americano

If you order a classic Americano at Starbucks, it tastes like watered down coffee—so it’s no surprise the iced Americano at Starbucks has a weak flavor. But make an Americano with an espresso machine and it’s incredible: rich and bold, with a robust dark espresso flavor. This Iced Americano is infinitely better than the Starbucks version. Here are the basic steps for how to make an iced Americano:

  • Make 1 doubleshot espresso. Use one of our basic methods including an espresso machine, portable espresso maker, French press, or Moka pot.
  • Pour the espresso into a glass with ½ cup ice. Swirl and taste.
  • Add cold water, if desired. If you’d like, you can dilute it with a bit of cold water (start with 2 tablespoons and increase to taste). But we like it with no dilution—just let the ice gradually water down the drink as it melts.

Tips for making the espresso

The essential part of an Iced Americano is making great espresso. You’ll want to start with an espresso roast coffee, which is important for achieving the robust, rich flavor—like espresso roast from Illy, Starbucks or Intelligentsia. Then, pick a method to try:

Iced Americano

Frequently asked questions

Can I use instant coffee instead of espresso?

While espresso is traditionally used for an Iced Americano, you can use strong brewed coffee or even instant coffee in a pinch. However, keep in mind that the flavor profile will be different.

What’s the difference between an Iced Americano and cold brew coffee?

Cold brew coffee is made by steeping coffee grounds in cold water for an extended period, resulting in a smoother, less acidic flavor. An Iced Americano, on the other hand, is made with freshly brewed espresso and offers a more intense coffee experience.

Can I adjust the strength of my Iced Americano?

You can easily adjust the strength by adding more or fewer espresso shots or by changing the ratio of espresso to water.

Can I add milk or sweetener to my Iced Americano?

Aa classic Iced Americano is enjoyed black, but feel free to customize it to your liking. You can add a splash of milk, cream, or your favorite sweetener. This starts to become similar to drinks an Iced Brown Sugar Oat Milk Espresso.

Creamy Coconut Margarita https://www.acouplecooks.com/coconut-margarita-recipe/ https://www.acouplecooks.com/coconut-margarita-recipe/#comments Tue, 10 Jun 2025 12:00:00 +0000 https://www.acouplecooks.com/?p=99447 This coconut margarita combines tequila, lime, and cream of coconut with a toasted coconut rim. This zingy and creamy spin on the classic cocktail is easy to whip up and always impresses everyone!

Coconut margarita

Here’s a creamy, cool, refreshing drink that’s an absolute must-try for any margarita lover — the coconut margarita!

Now, this isn’t your typical margarita. I’ve tested and perfected over 30 different margarita variations over the years (from pineapple to the Cadillac margarita), and this creamy coconut version consistently ranks at the top with my friends and family! The combination of tangy lime, smooth tequila, and rich coconut makes a drink that’s smooth and indulgent, without being too sweet. I love all my margarita recipes, but this one…this one is special!

Ingredients you’ll need

I’ve found that many coconut cocktails fall into one of two categories — too sweet and artificial-tasting, or so coconut-heavy that you lose the essence of the drink. This recipe strikes the perfect balance. The cream of coconut adds just enough tropical richness without overwhelming the classic margarita flavors, while the toasted coconut rim provides a textural element that elevates each sip.

The secret lies in the proportions. After recipe testing, I discovered that using exactly one ounce of cream of coconut creates the ideal creamy texture without making the drink overwhelming. Here are the ingredients you’ll need for a coconut margarita:

  • Tequila: I recommend using tequila blanco for this recipe. The clean, crisp flavor allows the coconut and lime to shine.
  • Triple Sec or Cointreau: I often use Cointreau because this orange liqueur adds depth and rounds out the flavors better. However, standard triple sec works perfectly well.
  • Lime juice: Never use bottled lime juice for margaritas. I always squeeze fresh limes – the brightness and acidity are essential for a good margarita recipe.
  • Cream of coconut: This sweetened syrup is specifically designed for cocktails: it’s usually sold in squeeze bottles and has the perfect consistency and sweetness level for drinks.

Cream of coconut vs coconut cream

The most important thing about this coconut margarita is getting the right coconut product. Buy cream of coconut, not coconut cream! As a rule of thumb, go for the squeeze bottle, not the can. Here’s the difference:

  • Cream of coconut is a sweetened syrup used for cocktails made with coconut cream and sugar. It’s sold in squeeze bottles to make it easy to add to drinks. You can find it sold online or in liquor stores. Coco Real is my go-to brand.
  • Coconut cream is unsweetened. It’s thick with a strong coconut flavor and sold in cans next to the coconut milk. This product is made from chilling coconut milk and then skimming off the layer of cream that floats to the top.
Coconut margarita recipe

Tips for the toasted coconut rim

The best part of this coconut margarita recipe is the toasted coconut rim! Drink rims are more than just visual: they add a crunch and pop of toasty flavor to each sip. Here’s what to know about making this tropical drink rim:

  • Toast the coconut. Making sure to toast the coconut accentuates the coconut flavor. Make sure to keep an eye on it: coconut can burn in a flash!
  • Use the cream of coconut to adhere the coconut. Alex had a stroke of genius with this drink: he used the cream of coconut to stick the coconut to the glass.
  • Dip the rim in cream of coconut, then a plate of toasted coconut. You’ll just want the outer edge of the glass to be covered.

Make a pitcher for a crowd

Serving a crowd? Mix up a coconut margarita pitcher instead! A pitcher is more efficient because it makes 8 servings in just 5 minutes!

Simply mix 8 times the ingredients with 3 large handfuls of ice in a pitcher. The ice is important because it dilutes the drink and simulates shaking in a cocktail shaker.

Storage and make ahead tips

While these margaritas are best enjoyed fresh, you can prepare elements in advance:

Coconut Rim Prep: Toast the coconut up to 3 days ahead and store in an airtight container. Prepare glass rims up to 2 hours before serving.

Pre-Mixed Base: For parties, I sometimes mix the liquid ingredients (except ice) as a pitcher and store in the refrigerator for up to 4 hours. Then add ice to the pitcher and serve.

Leftover Cream of Coconut: Store opened cream of coconut in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. You can use it to make other coconut cocktails like the Piña Colada, Painkiller, Chi Chi, Coconut Martini, or the popular Bushwacker!

Frequently asked questions

What if you accidentally buy coconut cream?

You can save your coconut margarita if you buy the wrong one. Here’s what to do: Use ½ ounce coconut cream and ½ ounce simple syrup in place of the 1 ounce cream of coconut.

What type of tequila is best for a coconut margarita?

A good quality blanco tequila works best. Blanco tequila has a clean, crisp flavor that lets the other ingredients shine.

Lemon Blueberry Mocktail https://www.acouplecooks.com/lemon-blueberry-mocktail/ https://www.acouplecooks.com/lemon-blueberry-mocktail/#respond Tue, 03 Jun 2025 11:30:00 +0000 https://www.acouplecooks.com/?p=171329 This lemon blueberry mocktail is zingy and refreshing, and looks like a craft cocktail! Ready in just 5 minutes with fresh ingredients, it’s the perfect non-alcoholic drink for any occasion.

Lemon blueberry mocktail

Here’s a fun fruity mocktail recipe that’s the perfect easy summer drink! Alex and I are cocktail experts and drink enthusiasts: and we fully support the current trend toward mindful drinking. Great drinks should be about flavor and experience, not just alcohol, right?

This lemon blueberry mocktail is all about that experience: the combination of tart lemon, sweet blueberries, and aromatic mint creates layers of complexity naturally! Even my craft cocktail–loving friends love it (Alex and I recently served it to a pregnant friend who raved). Here’s why you’ll love this mocktail:

  • Naturally refreshing: No artificial syrups or sugary mixers
  • Ready in 5 minutes: So quick and simple
  • Customizable sweetness: Perfect as-is or easily adjusted
  • Kid and adult approved: Sophisticated enough for everyone

How to make this lemon blueberry mocktail

The key to this mocktail’s incredible flavor is in the muddling technique and garnishes. Here’s my foolproof method:

  1. Muddle the mint: Start by muddling the mint a few times to release its oils.
  2. Add the frozen blueberries and muddle: Add 2 tablespoons to your cocktail shaker. I like using frozen berries here because they instantly add great color (Alex’s idea: and it works!). But you can use fresh if desired. Press and twist about 10-12 times to break down the berries.
  3. Add fresh lemon juice, then shake and strain: Squeeze half a lemon directly over the muddled mixture. This usually yields about 1 ½ to 2 tablespoons. Fill the shaker with ice and shake vigorously for 10-15 seconds, then strain into a glass.
  4. Top with tonic: Pour 4 ounces of chilled tonic water slowly to preserve the bubbles.
  5. Garnish: Garnish with mint leaves, lemon wedges and fresh blueberries.

Tips for next level mocktails

Through countless tests of mocktail recipes, I’ve discovered these game-changing tips:

  • Chill your glass: Pop it in the freezer while you prep for an extra-cold drink
  • Use quality tonic: Fever-Tree or Q Tonic make a noticeable difference (these are my favorites)
  • Make it pretty: The more garnishes, the better!
  • Batch smartly: Muddle larger quantities, but add tonic individually

Make this mocktail your own

One of the best things about this recipe is how easily it adapts to different preferences:

  • Make it sweeter: Add 1 teaspoon of honey, simple syrup, or agave nectar with the lemon juice
  • Lavender lemon: Add a tiny pinch of culinary lavender when muddling
  • Ginger sparkle: Muddle in a thin slice of fresh ginger for a spicy kick, or use ginger beer
  • Cucumber refresh: Add 3-4 cucumber slices for spa-water vibes
  • Rosemary twist: Replace mint with a small rosemary sprig
  • Tropical escape: Add a splash of coconut water for a tropical version
  • Fun garnish ideas: Thread fresh blueberries on a cocktail pick, add a lemon twist, or even add edible flowers

Make ahead & batch tips

You can make a large batch of muddled mixture up to 2 hours ahead. Store in an airtight container in the fridge, then add about 2 tablespoons to each glass, add ice, and top with tonic water. The flavors actually intensify with a little marinating time.

This mocktail is best made fresh, but you can store the muddled mixture (without tonic) for up to 24 hours in the fridge. The mint will darken slightly but the flavor remains excellent. Never add the tonic until serving—flat tonic water is sad tonic water.

  • 2 tablespoons frozen blueberries (see Notes)
  • Juice of 1/2 lemon
  • 46 fresh mint leaves, to garnish
  • 4 oz tonic water
  • Ice
  • Optional: Lemon slice and extra mint for garnish

Instructions

  1. To the glass of a cocktail shaker, muddle the mint, then add the frozen blueberries and muddle again.
  2. Add the lemon juice and fill with ice. Shake a few times until cold and strain into a glass.
  3. Top the glass with tonic water. Gently stir to combine.

You can also make this with fresh blueberries, but we love the instant color that frozen berries make (plus we always have them on hand)! We like fresh blueberries as a garnish.

Make it your own:

  • Sweeter: Add 1 tsp honey when muddling
  • Herbaceous: Try basil or rosemary instead of mint
  • Tropical: Add a splash of coconut water
  • Spa-style: Add cucumber slices when muddling

Best Frose Recipe (Frozen Rosé) https://www.acouplecooks.com/all-natural-frose-recipe-frozen-rose/ https://www.acouplecooks.com/all-natural-frose-recipe-frozen-rose/#comments Mon, 02 Jun 2025 03:20:00 +0000 https://www.acouplecooks.com/?p=19884 This perfectly pink frosé recipe delivers delicious frozen rosé at home! Made with just 3 natural ingredients and no refined sugar, it’s the ultimate summer cocktail that actually tastes like your favorite rosé wine.

Frose Recipe (Frozen Rosé)

Remember when frosé took over every bar a few summers ago? I was obsessed—and since Alex and I are cocktail expert and enthusiasts, we knew we had to try making frozen rosé at home. After testing dozens of recipes (tough job, I know!), most were either saccharine sweet or tasted nothing like actual rosé.

Finally, we landed on the recipe changed everything. It comes out tasting just like your favorite rosé, just frozen and even more refreshing! Our friends who very willingly volunteered as our taste testers absolutely loved it. The secret? We use real strawberries instead of artificial syrups, and a genius trick at the end that brings back all the wine’s character.

The 3 frose ingredients

When I first attempted frosé, I thought I’d be clever and just throw rosé in the freezer. Big mistake! Freezing wine alone makes it bitter and flat—all those delicate flavors disappear. Through experimentation, I learned that alcohol doesn’t freeze solid, which creates an icy, separated mess instead of the smooth slush we want.

The solution? Adding natural fruit sugars from strawberries balances the bitterness, while honey provides just enough sweetness to enhance (not mask) the rosé wine’s flavor. This combination creates the perfect slushy texture while preserving what makes rosé so delicious.

Choosing the right rosé

Not all rosés are created equal for frosé. After testing with everything from $8 bottles to $30 splurges, here’s what I discovered: choose a rosé you’d actually drink on its own.

Dry rosés work best—they won’t become too sweet once you add the strawberries and honey. My favorites are Provence-style rosés or any crisp, minerally bottle. Skip the super sweet white zinfandels; they’ll make your frosé taste like liquid candy (unless you like that!).

“This is delicious and so easy – the only frose recipe you’ll ever need. I just made it for the second time… and this time I doubled the batch :)” -Emi

Frose Recipe (Frozen Rose)

How to make frose

Frose is very simple to make: the hardest part is thinking ahead! Here’s what to know about the process:

  • Blend up the berries, rose and honey, then strain. Pour the ingredients into a covered baking dish.
  • Freeze for 6 hours or overnight! Here’s the key: you’ll need 6 hours to freeze! It’s easiest to whip up the frose recipe the night before, then blend and serve the day of. Or do it in the morning for evening entertaining!
  • The magic final step: After 6 hours of freezing, here’s where the magic happens. Blend the frozen mixture until fluffy—it’ll look like pink snow. Then comes my secret: add a splash of that reserved room-temperature rosé to each glass. This trick accomplishes two things: it creates the perfect slushy texture (not too icy, not too liquid) and brings back all those wine flavors that freezing dulled.

Storage and make ahead tips

Want to prep this frose recipe in advance? You can keep the blended wine and strawberries mixture in your freezer for a few days before serving it. As long as you keep it in a sealed container, your frose should keep well in the freezer! Try not to keep it frozen for too long though, since the fresh strawberries and the rose wine lose some of their flavor once frozen.

When to drink frosé

Drinking frose might be a tiny bit cliché, but that’s aok with me! It’s such a refreshing summer cocktail that’s ideal summer meals on the patio.

Frozen rose is a heightened version of the wine that brings a fun vibe to however you drink it. Enjoy this frozen cocktail with appetizers on the patio, or to accompany a summer grilled meal. Try it with grilled nachos, grilled veggie burgers, or grilled chicken and a range of summer salads.

  • 3 tablespoons honey (or maple syrup for vegan)

Lemon Water Recipe https://www.acouplecooks.com/lemon-water-recipe/ https://www.acouplecooks.com/lemon-water-recipe/#comments Sun, 01 Jun 2025 14:00:00 +0000 https://www.acouplecooks.com/?p=40661 This classic lemon water recipe is the ultimate refreshing drink! With just 2 ingredients and a few minutes of prep, you’ll have a pitcher of citrus-infused water with no calories or sugar.

Lemon water recipe

Lemon water is taking the world by storm, trending due its supposed health benefits. But in my opinion, the primary reason to drink this infused water? It tastes so refreshing! If you’re looking for a healthy drink that’s easy to make, this recipe is where it’s at.

Alex and I love whipping up a pitcher of lemon water to help us kick our La Croix addiction. My kids reach for it instead of juice boxes, Alex drinks it post-workout, and I’ve even converted my soda-loving mother-in-law. The best part? It takes literally 5 minutes to make a whole pitcher that lasts all day.

How to make lemon water

Why follow a recipe for lemon water? If you’re simply looking to drink a glass of citrus water, you can wing it! But this recipe makes a pitcher of 8 cups of water at a time, perfect for parties or storing in the refrigerator and sipping on all day long.

How much lemon should you put in your water? 1 lemon to 8 cups water. Here’s how to make lemon water:

  • Thinly slice a lemon and place it in the bottom of a large pitcher.
  • Using a wooden spoon, lightly mash the lemon to release its juices.
  • Add 8 cups cold water and refrigerate at least 1 hour before serving.

Cheater tip: The flavor is actually pretty lemony immediately. If you’re in a pinch, feel free to drink right away!

Cucumbers in pitcher

Cucumber lemon water is a fun variation: just add slices from ½ cucumber!

Benefits of drinking lemon water

Does drinking lemon water make you lose weight? Does it help in digestion, or prevent illness? There are lots of sources that claim health benefits, but many of them can become exaggerated.

What’s actually true

Here’s a Reader’s Digest article with a summary of the health benefits: 12 Benefits of Drinking Lemon Water. It states that lemon water:

  • Helps with hydration: The flavor encourages you to drink more water
  • Vitamin C boost: Lemons are packed with it
  • May aid digestion: The citric acid can help break down food
  • Freshens breath: Natural antibacterial properties
  • Supports immune system: Thanks to that vitamin C

What’s probably exaggerated

Despite what influencers claim, lemon water won’t magically melt away pounds or “detox” your body (your liver does that just fine). But replacing sugary drinks with lemon water? That absolutely can help with weight management and overall health.

We’re not health professionals, so Alex and my main rationale for drinking it is simple: drinking water is fantastic for your body! And the hint of citrus makes it taste so, so refreshing.

Side effects of drinking lemon water

Repeated exposure to your teeth of acids like lemon juice and lime juice over time can start to erode the enamel on your teeth. If you drink citrus water occasionally, this should not be a problem.

If you drink it daily, you may want to consider drinking it through a straw so it doesn’t touch your teeth. Or, try decreasing the amount of lemon in this recipe by half.

Lemon water recipe

Does the flavor of improve over time?

Yes, but to a point! This recipe calls for letting lemon water sit in the refrigerator for 1 hour, which intensifies the tangy flavor. The flavor also intensifies over the next few hours. We’d suggest drinking it within about 1 day though; because after a few days, the water can become bitter. All the more reason to drink lots of water!

Strawberry Daiquiri https://www.acouplecooks.com/strawberry-daiquiri-recipe/ https://www.acouplecooks.com/strawberry-daiquiri-recipe/#comments Sun, 01 Jun 2025 12:00:00 +0000 https://www.acouplecooks.com/?p=40310 This homemade strawberry daiquiri recipe makes luscious flavor in just 5 minutes! Made with frozen strawberries and white rum, it’s the perfectly balanced frozen cocktail that puts store-bought mixes to shame.

Strawberry daiquiri recipe: daiquiri in glass with straw

Ever tried to make a strawberry daiquiri recipe at home? There’s no need to buy store-bought daiquiri mix. A homemade strawberry daiquiri with real frozen strawberries tastes infinitely better than a mix from the store!

As a cocktail expert with over 300 cocktail recipes, I teamed up with Alex to crack the code on the perfect strawberry daiquiri. After lots of recipe testing, we finally nailed it: it has perfectly balanced sweetness and is bursting with real strawberry flavor. All you need are a few ingredients, a blender, and 5 minutes to whip up this classic drink!

“Divine daiquiri! I made it just as directed and it is fresh with well blended flavors. I will use this recipe for all future daiquiris.” -Pat

Keys to the perfect strawberry daiquiri recipe

Alex and I created this strawberry daiquiri recipe to have pure berry flavor. It’s just sweet enough, with just the right finish of white rum. If ever there was a perfect drink for sipping on the patio, this is it! Here’s why we love it:

  • The flavor is pure, using real berries! Who knows what’s in those store-bought daiquiri mixes. This daiquiri is made of real frozen berries and lime, giving it a lush flavor.
  • It’s perfectly sweetened. Some strawberry daiquiris are overly sweet, but not this one. It’s sweetened just enough so you can enjoy the pure berry flavor without a sugar crash. Pure maple syrup is a natural sweetener that we love: it gently sweetens and adds flavor nuance.

Tips for making a frozen daiquiri

A few things to keep in mind when you’re making this strawberry daiquiri recipe:

  • Use good quality rum. The better the quality of rum, the tastier the drink. Look for a bottle in the mid-price range, around $15 to $20 for a 750 ml bottle.
  • Use best quality frozen strawberries. We tried this with a few different types of frozen berries, and it tastes much better with the best quality brand.
  • Freeze or chill your rum (optional). When we made this strawberry daiquiri recipe, we chilled our rum in a cocktail shaker to get it really cold. You also can throw the rum in the freezer the night before to keep the drink very cold.

The daiquiri formula

This strawberry daiquiri and the frozen daiquiri are variations on the daiquiri, a cocktail made simply with rum, lime and sugar and served straight up in a cocktail glass. It’s a classic sour cocktail invented in the early 1900’s.

The frozen daiquiris popular today came along later as variations on the theme! Another spin to try is the sophisticated Hemingway daiquiri, starring grapefruit juice and Maraschino liqueur.

Virgin strawberry daiquiri in glass.

Try it virgin

The virgin strawberry daiquiri is a popular mocktail variation on the classic. Our virgin daiquiri uses similar ingredients, but skips the rum and uses tonic water or lemon lime soda. It makes a bubbly, sweet and frosty drink that we think is nearly as good as the original.

Serving suggestions and making batch drinks

  • Glasses: Serve in a hurricane glass for full tropical vibes, or mason jars for backyard BBQs.
  • Garnish ideas: Add a fresh strawberry as a garnish, or go fancy with a strawberry fan and a lime wheel. A mint sprig adds an extra, and you can always add a cocktail umbrella as a fun touch!
  • Making batches for a party: Multiply the recipe, blending in batches as necessary. Store in the freezer. Before the party, re-blend (adding a bit of lime juice as necessary to get it to blend.

Let us know if you try out this strawberry daiquiri recipe, and if it helps for exhausted parent evenings like ours! Or serve it at a bridal shower, girl’s night, cookout, pool party, or anytime you need a fruity drink.

Frequently asked questions

What rum is best for a strawberry daiquiri?

A light rum is your best bet! Opt for white rum or silver rum for a clean and refreshing flavor that won’t overpower the strawberries.

Can I use frozen strawberries in a daiquiri?

Frozen strawberries are best to achieve that frosty daiquiri texture; we don’t recommend using frozen berries here.

My daiquiri is too sweet or too sour! How can I adjust it?

If it’s too sour, add a bit more simple syrup and blend. Taste and continue to add sweetener until the flavor is balanced. If it’s too sweet, add a splash more fresh lime juice to balance the sweetness and add a refreshing tartness.

What’s a fun twist on the classic strawberry daiquiri?

Replace half the frozen berries with another frozen fruit like mango, pineapple, or peach, for a unique flavor combination.

Perfect Strawberry Smoothie https://www.acouplecooks.com/perfect-strawberry-smoothie/ https://www.acouplecooks.com/perfect-strawberry-smoothie/#comments Thu, 15 May 2025 04:09:57 +0000 https://www.acouplecooks.com/?p=61873 This creamy strawberry smoothie is bursting with flavor, easy to make, and endlessly customizable. It’s perfect to enjoy for breakfast or after a workout.

Strawberry Smoothie Recipe

Over the years, I’ve created over 60 different smoothie recipes featuring all of my favorite fruits, vegetables, and other nutritious ingredients to keep everyone at home full and energized.

While I love playing with complex flavors, sometimes the best thing to do is to keep it simple. This homemade strawberry smoothie is exactly that, but in the greatest way possible.

It’s made with just 5 ingredients, and its creamy texture and berry flavor satisfy my smoothie cravings year-round. It’s my go-to spin on the iconic purée – a subtly sweet, frosty blend that’s on constant repeat in my house.

Since I first shared this fan-favorite recipe, hundreds of home cooks have made and loved it. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. (And as much as so many homemade smoothie lovers already have!)

What’s in This Strawberry Smoothie

You’ll want to start with strawberries, naturally, which are one of my favorite ingredients for a healthy smoothie. Along with the berries, here’s what you’ll need:

  • Frozen strawberries: Frozen berries add an icy texture to this fruit smoothie. If you prefer using fresh strawberries over frozen fruit, I’d substitute the ripe banana I’ll mention next for frozen bananas for a similar effect.
  • Ripe banana: Many smoothie recipes call for frozen bananas, but I don’t often have them on hand. Feel free to use them if you have them! You can omit the banana completely if you’re not a fan. Just double the yogurt.
  • Greek yogurt: Greek yogurt gives this recipe a protein boost and helpful probiotics while adding creaminess. Vanilla or strawberry yogurt is fine, as well, if you want a little extra flavor.
  • Milk: A smoothie needs just the right amount of liquid to blend well. Too little liquid, and the blender gets stuck. Add too much, and it’ll be too watery. Substitute with non-dairy milk if you’d like.
  • Maple syrup or honey: Adding a hint of maple syrup or honey brings out the sweetness in the berries. If you’re on a low-sugar diet, you can skip the sweetener, but it may be slightly flat. Adjust the sweetness to taste after you blend, depending on the ripeness of your fruit.
Best strawberry smoothie

Additional Mix-Ins

I love this strawberry smoothie as is, but it’s an easy recipe to customize. Pick flavors that work well with the fruity base – just avoid veggies like spinach that turn your smoothie into an unappealing shade of brown. (Try these  recipes for green smoothies if that’s what you’re after!)

Here are some of my favorite add-ins that work with this smoothie that can help boost nutrition and flavor:

  • Nut butter: Use 1-2 tablespoons of almond butter, peanut butter, or cashew butter, based on how strong of a nutty flavor you like.
  • Chia seeds: Boost your dietary fiber with a handful of chia seeds. Flax seeds and hemp seeds also add bulk and fiber without overpowering flavor.
  • Cocoa powder: You’re basically going for chocolate-covered strawberries here. Cocoa powder gives your smoothie a rich, chocolatey flavor. You may have to add a tad more sugar here to balance the bitterness of the cocoa.
  • Herbs: Add fresh mint for a cool, refreshing finish or a few basil leaves for peppery notes. Both are beautiful as a garnish, too.
  • Protein powder: Protein powder is a popular add-on to smoothies, especially in the morning or post-workout. It can make the texture thicker and affect the flavor, though!
  • Vanilla: About ¼ to ½ teaspoon of vanilla extract adds some sweetness to this easy strawberry smoothie without adding sugar.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

“Wow!! I never write reviews on anything, but this is the VERY BEST smoothie I have ever had! Bravo! You nailed it!”

– Lacy

Try Different Variations

You don’t have to stop at strawberries! You can turn this recipe into something fresh and new depending on the fruits you use. I love adding whatever is in season to a berry smoothie…or whatever catches my eye in the frozen foods section! Here are a few ideas that I’ve tested:

  • Strawberry Peach Smoothie: Substitute half of the berries with frozen peaches for something sweeter.
  • Strawberry Pineapple Smoothie: Use frozen pineapple for a frothy puree with a tropical finish.
  • Strawberry Blueberry Smoothie: This one is for the berry fans. Reduce your strawberries by half and add frozen blueberries. (Try raspberries or blackberries if you prefer.)
  • Strawberry Mango Smoothie: Frozen mango is easy to find at the grocery store. Don’t forget to save a few for a garnish!
  • Chocolate Strawberry Smoothie: If you’re craving chocolate, this one’s for you! This variation adds some hearty grains alongside the cocoa powder for something nourishing that still satisfies your sweet tooth.

How to Store

Most smoothies are best when you have them right away, but this one is also delicious in a bigger batch. When stored in a sealed container or mason jar with the lid on, your smoothie will last up to 2 days refrigerated. If it separates, just shake it up before you take a sip.

Dietary Notes

This strawberry smoothie is vegetarian and gluten-free. For a vegan, plant-based, and dairy-free option, choose a plant milk like oat milk or almond milk as your base and omit the yogurt.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup milk of choice
  • ¼ cup Greek yogurt (or plain, strawberry, or vanilla yogurt)
  • 1 ½ tablespoons maple syrup, honey, or agave syrup
  • 2 cups frozen strawberries
  • 1 ripe banana (at room temperature)

Instructions

  1. Place all ingredients in the order listed in a blender, breaking the banana into pieces.
  2. Add ½ cup ice.
  3. Blend until creamy and frothy, stopping a few times to scrape down the sides.
  4. Taste and adjust sweetness as desired.
  5. Serve immediately or store in a covered jar in the refrigerator for 2 days.

Notes

Subtle variations on the base recipe will affect the flavor of your smoothie. For example, you may want to start with less sweetener if you use vanilla or strawberry yogurt. You can always add more to taste at the end if your fruit isn’t as ripe as you’d like.

If you want a vegan smoothie, follow the recipe above, omitting the Greek yogurt. Add your favorite plant milk (e.g. oat, almond, or coconut milk) to get it to blend. You can also try my Strawberry Banana Smoothie. It’s vegan and uses only 2 ingredients outside of water and ice!

For optimal blending, start with your liquids at the bottom of the blender. If your smoothie is having issues blending, stop and scrape a few times, then try adding a little more liquid.

Cottage Cheese Smoothie https://www.acouplecooks.com/cottage-cheese-smoothie/ https://www.acouplecooks.com/cottage-cheese-smoothie/#comments Mon, 12 May 2025 13:22:05 +0000 https://www.acouplecooks.com/?p=170977 This creamy strawberry cheesecake cottage cheese smoothie has become my secret weapon for protein-packed breakfasts and snacks! With 20 grams of protein, it’s the perfect solution when you need something quick, nutritious, and delicious.

Cottage cheese smoothie

Welcome to my favorite way to add protein to smoothies—cottage cheese! While I typically add Greek yogurt to smoothies to make a creamy base, with cottage cheese on a major trend of course I had to try it.

This cottage cheese smoothie comes out so creamy, fruity, and irresistible, and the strawberry cheesecake flavor makes it that much more fun! The cheese makes a luxuriously creamy texture while adding a good amount of protein. I often whip up this smoothie for my kids (who are obsessed, naturally), but I love it just as much.

Ingredient notes for a cottage cheese smoothie

If you’ve never tried cottage cheese in a smoothie before, you might be skeptical. I wasn’t though, because after making our cottage cheese pancakes and cottage cheese mac and cheese, I know what cottage cheese can do! Here are a few ingredient notes for this smoothie:

  • Full-fat cottage cheese is best: It creates the creamiest, most cheesecake-like flavor. Low-fat works in a pinch but doesn’t deliver quite the same luscious texture.
  • Frozen strawberries are essential: Fresh strawberries make a thinner smoothie that lacks that milkshake-like consistency.
  • Ripe banana is the texture secret: Beyond adding natural sweetness, the banana contributes to the smooth texture that makes this smoothie so special.

Pro blending tips

I usually make my cottage cheese smoothie in a large blender (Vitamix), but it also works great in a small blender. Here’s what to do to ensure easy blending:

  1. Add ingredients in the right order: Place the liquid (milk) at the bottom of your blender, followed by soft ingredients (cottage cheese, banana), then frozen ingredients (strawberries, ice).
  2. Blend thoroughly: Start on low speed for about 10 seconds to break down the frozen ingredients, then increase to high until completely smooth—usually about 30-45 seconds.
  3. Taste and adjust: After blending, take a quick taste. If you prefer a sweeter smoothie, add a bit more maple syrup. If it’s too thick, add a splash more milk. You can also try using Medjool dates as a sweetener if you like.

Make it your own—easy variations

Of course, you can adapt this smoothie to different preferences and dietary needs—and make fun new flavors! Here are some of my favorite variations:

Berry Swap: Replace strawberries with frozen blueberries, raspberries, or a mixed berry blend for different cheesecake flavors. I mean, who wouldn’t want blueberry cheesecake smoothie?

Protein Boost: Add a half scoop of vanilla protein powder for an additional 10-15g of protein.

Tropical Twist: Swap half the strawberries for frozen pineapple chunks and use coconut milk instead of milk.

Chocolate: Add a tablespoon of cocoa powder or use chocolate protein powder for a chocolate-covered strawberry flavor. You may need to increase the sweetener a bit to offset the bitterness of the chocolate.

Storage and make ahead tips

Store the smoothie in an airtight jar. It will keep in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. The texture will thicken, so you may need to add a splash of milk and give it a quick shake or stir before enjoying.

Chelada https://www.acouplecooks.com/chelada/ https://www.acouplecooks.com/chelada/#respond Sun, 11 May 2025 21:01:00 +0000 https://www.acouplecooks.com/?p=91062 The Chelada is a Mexican beer cocktail that’s become my warm weather staple! With just three ingredients—Mexican lager, fresh lime juice, and a spiced salt rim—it’s an easy way to transform ordinary beer into something truly special.

Chelada

Want a refreshing beer cocktail that’s as irresistible as it is easy to mix up? Try a Chelada! This Mexican drink is the perfect balance of cold beer, tangy lime, and savory salt that instantly transports you to vacation mode after one sip.

After experimenting with beers, lime ratios, and rim seasonings, I finally perfected a recipe for this easy cocktail that works for anytime: brunch, lazy drinks on the patio, or a shrimp tacos dinner party. As two drink experts, Alex and I love its zingy, hoppy flavor paired with a salty rim. It also couldn’t be easier to mix up, making it one of our top picks for laid-back entertaining!

Ingredients in an authentic Chelada

A Chelada is a type of cervesa preparada: a beer cocktail or “prepared beer” in Spanish. There are all sorts of variations on it all over Mexico, so there’s no “official” recipe. One theory on where the name came from: ordering “mi chela helada“, which means “my ice cold beer” in Spanish! But know one knows for sure.

The Chelada features Mexican lager with lime. Another cervesa preparada you may know is the Michelada, which is like a Bloody Mary made with beer. Here’s what you’ll need for a Chelada:

  • Mexican lager beer (like Sol, Corona, Modelo, or other)
  • Lime juice
  • Fine sea salt and Old Bay or tajin, for the rim
Chelada

Tips for making a Chelada

It’s so easy to make a Chelada: you don’t even need to dirty a cocktail shaker! My favorite cocktails are the types that are built right in the glass. Here are my tips for a Chelada:

  • Add the lime juice first. This recipe has just enough lime juice to add a zing, but not so much that it overwhelms the delicate beer flavor.
  • Consider clear ice for a polished look. Clear ice is ice you can make at home that’s perfectly crystal clear, instead of cloudy like normal ice. It’s easy to make and makes your cocktails look like they’re from a fancy bar. Here’s How to Make Clear Ice.
  • Use your favorite Mexican style lager. We like Modelo Especial, Corona, Sol, or Pacifico: their light, crisp character pairs with lime without overwhelming it.

The rim makes the drink

The key to a good Chelada is the salt rim! Like a good margarita, it’s essential to the overall flavor. Using salt on the rim helps to bring out the sour flavors of the lime-infused beer.

  • Place equal parts fine salt and Old Bay or tajin on a plate. Old Bay is an American spice blend that packs a powerful punch. Use purchased or homemade. Or for a more traditional Mexican vibe use tajin, a popular chili, lime and salt blend.
  • Cut a wedge in a lime to wet the glass rim. This is much easier than using your finger! Just cut a notch in the lime and run it around the edge.
  • Dip the outer edge of the glass in the salt. All you want is the outer edge of the glass, not the inside where it can fall in the drink. Shake off any loose salt into the sink.
Chelada

Make it your own—a few variations

Once you’ve mastered the classic Chelada, try these personal variations I’ve developed over years of experimentation:

Spicy Chelada: Add 2-3 dashes of hot sauce and a small slice of serrano or jalapeño pepper to the glass before pouring the beer.

Chelada Especial: Add a splash (about ½ ounce) of fresh orange juice along with the lime for a slightly sweeter, more complex citrus flavor.

Non-Alcoholic Chelada: Replace the beer with a non-alcoholic Mexican lager for a refreshing mocktail.

What to serve with it

Some cocktails don’t pair well with food: they’re more meant to be the main event (like an Old Fashioned or a Manhattan). Other cocktails go very well with food: like the Chelada! It’s meant to be enjoyed with food. Here’s what to food to serve with a Chelada:

Frequently asked questions

What kind of beer is best for a Chelada?

Light Mexican lagers like Corona, Modelo, or Pacifico are the most common choices for Cheladas. However, you can experiment with other light beers to find your preference.

Do I need to use fresh lime juice?

Fresh lime juice is always best for the freshest flavor.

Is there a non-alcoholic version of a Chelada?

Yes! You can easily make a virgin Chelada by using non-alcoholic beer. Here are our top recommendations for Best Non Alcoholic Beer.

Can I make Cheladas in advance for a party?

I don’t recommend pre-mixing Cheladas as the beer will quickly lose its carbonation. Instead, prepare your rimmed glasses in advance and keep Mexican beer well-chilled. Set up a station with fresh lime juice measured into small containers so guests can assemble their own drinks, maintaining that perfect fizz.

How to make a celery smoothie

Celery smoothie ingredients

This celery smoothie has a short list of ingredients. Here’s all you need:

  • Celery: A great way to use up leftover celery! You’ll need ¾ cup chopped.
  • Green apple: The flavor maker! Apple brings naturally sweet tart flavor.
  • Banana: Banana is the other key to a great celery smoothie! It makes for the perfect creamy texture with no dairy required.
  • Spinach: You can use either baby spinach or standard. If you use standard, chop it into pieces first.
  • Fresh ginger: A must! Grab some fresh ginger root at the store. The way it combines with the celery flavor is perfection.
  • Lemon juice: Citrus brings a brightness that’s lacking without it. Another must!

Tips for how to peel and mince ginger

Ginger root can be challenging to work with, so we’ve got a few tips for you! Pick up some in the produce section of your grocery to use for this celery smoothie. (Use the rest for some killer fried rice!) It can be tricky to peel, so we’ve got some tips for you:

  • Peel with a spoon! This works much better than a vegetable peeler! Use the edge of a spoon to peel off the skin of the ginger.
  • Grate it: Then use a grater or microplane to grate the ginger into a pulp.
  • Or mince it: If you don’t have a grater, use a large chef’s knife to slice thin slices in one direction, then chop in the other direction until the ginger is minced into small pieces.

Amp up the protein

As is, this celery smoothie is mostly fruit, veggies and liquid. But are you looking for a smoothie that’s packed with protein for breakfast or a snack? Here are some ideas to add protein:

  • Greek yogurt: Make a creamy celery smoothie! Yogurt adds quite a bit of protein, and probiotics for a healthy gut. Add ¼ cup to ½ cup, to taste. If necessary, add a few splashes of water to get it to blend.
  • Nut butter. Add almond butter or cashew butter to the mix! Start with 1 tablespoon, and add more as desired. It will change the color and flavor a bit, so make sure to add it to taste.

Smoothie storage tips

Smoothies are best eaten immediately. But this spinach smoothie actually lasts 1 day refrigerated, stored in a sealed container or a mason jar with the lid on. It may separate, which is perfectly natural. Just shake it up and you’re good to go! After 1 day it starts to lose flavor.

St Germain Spritz https://www.acouplecooks.com/st-germain-spritz/ https://www.acouplecooks.com/st-germain-spritz/#comments Mon, 05 May 2025 13:27:00 +0000 https://www.acouplecooks.com/?p=65353 The St Germain Spritz is a delightful blend of elderflower liqueur, sparkling wine, and club soda. It’s perfect for sipping on patios, enjoying at brunch, or anytime you crave a lightly sweet and bubbly cocktail!

St germain spritz in stemmed cocktail glass with thyme garnish.

Why you’ll love this cocktail

The first time I tried St Germain liqueur years ago is still a strong memory—the delicate, floral sweetness immediately captivated me! After testing countless St Germain cocktail recipes, the St Germain Spritz has become my absolute favorite way to showcase this elderflower liqueur.

What makes this cocktail so special? Well, it’s so refreshing without being too sweet, sophisticated without being pretentious, and—maybe best of all—it takes minutes to prepare. I love other spritzes (like the popular Aperol Spritz), but I would pick this version every time! The light, effervescent quality makes it perfect as a brunch drink, but it’s equally great to make for a summer barbecue.

The essential spritz ingredients

The St Germain spritz is variation on the popular Aperol spritz, an Italian aperitif. This variation simply swaps in this elderflower liqueur in this classic formula! With just three main ingredients, the quality of each component really matters. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • St Germain: I’m a big fan of St-Germain, a popular elderflower liqueur tastes light, sweetly floral, and fragrant. It’s quite popular and easy to find at most liquor stores. Despite its vintage-looking bottle, St Germain was actually created in 2007—though its popularity makes it feel like a classic that’s been around forever.
  • Sparkling wine: Traditional spritzes use Prosecco, which has delicious fruit-forward notes and is typically more budget-friendly than Champagne. But if you prefer, feel free to use Champagne.
  • Soda water: Just a splash of club soda or unflavored sparkling water adds dilution and effervescence. I use our SodaStream at home for the freshest bubbles, but any club soda or unflavored sparkling water works great.

🍾 Tip: A 750 ml bottle of Prosecco is 25 ounces, enough for 8 drinks. If you’re making 2 drinks, a mini bottle is perfect—it holds 187 mL or about 6 ounces!

How to make a St Germain spritz

I’ve refined this recipe to be as simple as possible while maintaining perfect balance. The good news is that unlike many cocktails, this one requires no special equipment or techniques—just a gentle stir and you’re done! Here are the basic steps (or skip to the full recipe):

Step 1: Chill the St Germain

  • Pour 2 ounces (4 tablespoons) of St Germain into a wine glass or spritz glass filled with ice. Give it a quick stir to chill the liqueur.
  • Why this matters: Starting with the liqueur allows it to properly chill before adding the bubbly ingredients.
St Germain Spritz by St-Germain bottle

Step 2: Add the bubbles

  • Add 3 ounces (6 tablespoons) of chilled Prosecco or Champagne, followed by 1 ounce (2 tablespoons) of soda water.
  • Technique tip: Pour the sparkling wine slowly down the side of the glass to preserve as much effervescence as possible. The soda water should be added last as a finishing touch.
Champagne pouring into St Germain Spritz glass

Step 3: Final touch and garnish

  • Squeeze in a lemon wedge and give everything a gentle stir. Garnish with a sprig of fresh thyme, lavender, or rosemary.
  • Pro tip: The herb garnish isn’t just decorative—the aromatic qualities enhance the floral notes in the drink with every sip. I like using thyme in spring and summer, and rosemary during cooler months.

Variation: the Hugo spritz

After falling in love with the St Germain Spritz, I discovered its cousin—the Hugo spritz cocktail. This variation is incredibly popular in the Alpine regions, where fresh mint adds a refreshing dimension that complements the elderflower. To make a Hugo Spritz, follow the same recipe but add:

  • 3-4 fresh mint leaves, gently muddled
  • Replace the lemon wedge with lime
  • Garnish with an additional mint sprig
Spritz recipes in stemmed glasses: Campari spritz, amaro spritz, St Germain spritz

The perfect spritz ratio

The perfect spritz ratio (yes, it’s a thing) is 3-2-1: three parts sparkling wine, two parts liqueur, one part soda water. This formula works for virtually any spritz variation and creates the ideal balance of flavor and effervescence.

Once you’ve mastered this with St Germain, you can apply it to create endless spritz variations with different liqueurs! Try these spritz ideas:

Step it up: try clear ice!

Want to really impress your guests? Clear ice elevates this simple cocktail to craft cocktail bar status. Here’s my simplified method: all you need is 24 hours and a small cooler! Go to How to Make Clear Ice.

Frequently asked questions

How do you pronounce St-Germain?

The name is French, so say “Sahn-jer-MAHN” with your best French accent. I’ve heard plenty of pronunciations over the years, but this is the authentic one!

Is soda water necessary?

Club soda adds a refreshing touch and essential fizziness. However, if you don’t have it, a splash of plain seltzer water will work too.

What’s the best way to garnish a St Germain Spritz?

A lemon or lime wedge is the classic garnish. For a more floral touch, add a sprig of fresh elderflower (if available) or lavender. A slice of cucumber can also be a refreshing addition.

Can I make a batch for a party?

Absolutely! For a group of 8, use:
2 cups St Germain
1 750 ml bottle Prosecco
1 cup soda water
But remember—add the Prosecco and soda water just before serving to maintain maximum bubbles.

Sage Tea https://www.acouplecooks.com/sage-tea/ https://www.acouplecooks.com/sage-tea/#comments Sun, 06 Apr 2025 15:55:00 +0000 https://www.acouplecooks.com/?p=71427 Here’s how to make sage tea, a soothing herbal infusion made with just boiling water and fresh sage leaves! It’s incredibly easy to prepare with a beautiful pine-forward flavor that’s perfect for cozy sipping.

Sage tea

When I first started growing herbs, I mostly focused on using them for cooking. But with an abundance of sage taking over my herb garden, I found a new way to use it—herbal tea! What I love most about this sage tea recipe is its simplicity.

Store-bought herbal teas often contain additives or flavorings, but this homemade version lets the pure fresh sage shine through. It tastes cozy and pine-forward, with a gentle earthiness that’s incredibly soothing. I make this tea often (so does Alex)—it’s great if you’re feeling under the weather or simply to make your daily water intake more interesting!

Health Benefits of Sage Tea

While I primarily make sage tea because I enjoy the flavor, many people drink it for its potential health benefits. I’m not a medical professional, so I can’t make health claims about sage tea. But I can say from personal experience that a warm cup feels incredibly restorative! According to the professionals, fresh sage may have these health benefits:

  • Anti-inflammatory properties: Herbalists have used sage for centuries to reduce inflammation
  • Soothing for sore throats: The natural compounds may help ease throat pain
  • Memory and brain health: Some studies suggest sage may support cognitive function
  • Skin health: Sage contains antioxidants that may benefit your skin
  • Digestive support: Some people find sage tea soothing for the digestive system

How to Make Sage Tea—Step by Step

Making sage tea couldn’t be simpler, but a few techniques will ensure you get the best flavor every time:

1. Start with quality water

Fill a kettle with filtered water and bring it to a full boil. I use an electric kettle that we also use for our morning pour over coffee, but any method works fine.

Pro tip: Water quality matters more than you might think! Chlorinated tap water can interfere with the delicate flavor of herbal teas.

2. Prepare your fresh sage

While the water heats, wash your sage leaves thoroughly to remove any sand or soil under cool running water.

My technique: I leave the leaves attached to the stem rather than chopping them. This makes them much easier to remove after steeping.

3. Steep properly

Place the sage (about 6 leaves) in a mug and pour over the boiling water. Allow the herbs to steep for 5 minutes—no longer, or the tea may develop bitter notes.

Alternative method: If you prefer, you can also chop the sage leaves and place them in a tea strainer before steeping.

Sage

Growing Your Own Sage for Tea

If you’re not growing sage yet, I highly recommend starting! It’s one of the easiest herbs to grow at home. Sage is a perennial in many growing zones, meaning it comes back year after year with minimal effort. In our garden, the sage plant has become quite robust, providing leaves for both cooking and tea-making nearly year-round. Here are my tips for growing sage:

  • Location: Choose a spot with full sun (at least 6 hours daily)—you can grow it in a pot or garden bed
  • Soil: Well-draining soil is essential—sage doesn’t like wet feet
  • Water: Once established, sage is drought-tolerant and needs minimal watering
  • Harvesting: Cut stems rather than picking individual leaves, and never harvest more than ⅓ of the plant at once
  • Winter care: In colder zones, mulch around the base before winter to protect the roots

Uses Beyond Tea

Once you start growing sage, you might find yourself with an abundance of this wonderful herb. Here are some of my favorite ways to use sage in recipes beyond tea:
